Hul’qumi’num 100 - Introduction to Hul’qumi’num
The focus of this course involves communication through listening and speaking. Students become familiar with the sounds of the language as well as utilizing common words and phrases. Emphases is on conversation skills.
Hul’qumi’num 101 – Continuation of introduction to Hul’qumi’num
This course extends the listening, speaking, reading and writing skills introduced in Hul’qumi’num100. Students increase the number of words they can recognize and reproduce and develop basic understanding of the grammar of the Hul’qumi’num. Communication is enhanced to include initiating simple questions and responses as well as a deeper understanding of writing and reading Hul’qumi’num
Hul’qumi’num 200 – Hul’qumi’num Immersion
This course is taught in a language immersion format. Instruction is primarily in Hul’qumi’num and students converse in Hul’qumi’num throughout the course. Common vocabulary words, grammar and sentence construction is reviewed and new vocabulary is introduced. Students learn cultural protocols, vocabulary, sentence structure, grammar, and pronunciation.
Hul’qumi’num 201 – Continuation of Hul’qumi’num Immersion
A continuation of Hul’qumi’num 200, this course provides an opportunity for students to continue conversing in Hul’qumi’num and display learning through mini presentations in front class peers. Elders and community are present throughout the program.
Hul’qumi’num 300 – Mastery of Hul’qumi’num
The ultimate goal of this course is for students to be able to participate in conversations at the intermediate levels of difficulty without the aid of written notes It is a continuation of language development with an emphasis on fluency and accuracy in the language. It is expected that students demonstrate mastery of phrases and vocabulary at the 100 and 200 levels, in addition to new phrases and vocabulary introduced throughout the 300 semester. Students conduct research towards original of work, one of which adds value to the community, presents findings to Elders and to community at large.
